Wicked Women Writers 2012 Challenge: Horror takes no Holidays

The contest is live!

The first audio link is the Horror Addicts podcast. The second contains eight 15-minute stories from women writers. If you want to vote, listen to all of them, but if you just want to hear mine it appears at 1hr 30 min.

I threw my hat in the ring because I just plain wanted to do audio fiction, but it's been great on many levels.

They say the best class you can take as an artist is where you're the worst person in the room. I probably would have chickened out if I'd known I'd be the least experienced writer in the group, but I'm glad I didn't. The Wicked Women are a wonderful coven. They've been supportive and welcoming, and I've enjoyed getting to know them and their work.

And it forced me into recording now.

I wrote down the wrong date. I'm embarrassed to tell you how little time was left when I realized my mistake. After drafting the story fermenting in my head for months, I had 24 hours to learn the equipment and software to record and edit my audio. It didn't all go as smoothly as I hoped...

But I loved it.

Really loved it.

So, I hope you enjoy this first effort. I'm climbing a steep learning curve and hatching plans
to record more. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Big Sale

Or course, any sale is big, but this one feels special.

I became a fan of Escape Artists on my way out to the CSSF Novel Writer's Workshop in 2009. It's a long drive from Philly to Lawrence, KS and I listened to a lot of great stories.

The next year I wrote a 500 word short story, Queen, in their flash fiction contest, which made the semifinal round. I also took the opportunity to expand and workshop it that summer at Kij Johnson's Repeat Offenders Workshop.

This is the first short story I wrote as an adult. It's the first story I started submitting. It's not my first sale, but I couldn't be prouder it found a home on Pseudopod. Can't wait to hear what they do with it!

Angel of the Resurrection

I don't fly and have travelled across this country many times by train. I've seen a lot of rail stations. Still, I think Philadelphia's is the most beautiful. (Not that I'm biased or anything...)

Here's a bit of inspiration for "Terminal," my submission to Wicked Women Writer's horror podcasting contest:

Promise to post links when they're available.

Hooray, hooray! The first of May....

My life has been wonderfully full of family and friends and accolades in the-day-job-that-is-more-than-a-day-job. But from the work I've taken on today, one would think I'd just been twiddling my thumbs.

Today I:
  • I got my assignment for Wicked Women Writers.  I won't give anything away, but the wheels are turning.
  • Signed up for A Story A Day which is pure insanity, but I need a spur to prick the sides of my short story intent while editing my novel.
  • Finally found the opening for my novel.
  • Wrote a twisty little fairy tale for ASAD.
Wish me luck!

My First Sale!!!

I am very proud to announce that my story "Pre-nup" is the winner of Earthbound Fiction's February Contest. They wanted a 500 word or less love story, and apparently they liked my twisted take. It can be found online for the month of March at:

http://www.earthboundfiction.com/flash-contest#!__flash-of-the-month

Submitting stories to Earthbound's Flash contest was one of my goals for the year. I think they have really great prompts, and the best acknowledgement of your submission letter in the business.

Stop by and give them some love. ;)
